<note>Mailisah, 2022. “The Students’ Difficulties in English Listening at MTs. Darul Muta’alimin Samarinda in Academic Year 2022/2023”. Thesis, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Tarbiyah Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This research was guided by Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the first supervisor, and Ms. Anis Komariah, M.Pd as the second supervisor.
Listening is one of the four language skills because the first step someone learns a language is by listening to the language. Listening is an activity of listening and trying to understand the meaning. Most students experience difficulties during the listening process. It can occur due to a lack of mastery of words and inadequate supporting facilities. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher determined the difficulties students face in listening to English in MTs. Darul Muta’alimin Samarinda Academic Year 2022/2023.
The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive method. The instruments used in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. Data collection through interview answers. The subjects of this research were students of class VIII at MTs. Darul Muta’alamin Samarinda with 30 students as respondents.
Based on the results of this research, the researcher found that the difficulties faced by students in listening to English were caused by: first, the low- quality recording material affected the student’s ability to understand the material; second, unfamiliar vocabulary is related to students’ lack of knowledge about their vocabulary; third, physical condition problems related to uncomfortable classroom conditions and causing students to lose focus in learning English listening; fifth, noise problems are also associated with the noise around them, loss of concentration and lack of vocabulary knowledge, which makes it difficult for them to listen to the material; and lastly, the lack of concentration is caused by a noisy environment from inside or outside the classroom and causes students to focus less on listening to the sound from the speakers.</note>
