Semantics is a branch of linguistics that studies meaning. By studying semantics we can understand how meaning can affect everyday conversation. Semantics also help reduce miscommunication in conversation. The purpose of this study is to find out what semantics are used in English slogans that appear in television commercials. and the use of persuasive strategies in English slogan advertisements appearing in television commercials.
This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from several slogan in television advertisement. The subject of this data is television advertisement. The researcher tried to describe the used of semantic meaning in slogan advertisement and the used of persuasive strategies in English slogan. To collect data, researcher used documentation technique, the documentation is a technique to collect the data from recording television advertisement.
Based on the result of the research the researcher concludes that the type of figure of speech that is widely used in advertising is hyperbole. The type of figure of speech that is widely used in advertising is hyperbole. Persuasive strategies are widely used in advertising is suggestion, along with using a semantic approach, it makes slogan sound more attractive.</note>
