Supervisors: (1) Dr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd (2) Rostanti Toba, M.Pd. Writing is one of the English language skills that should be studied and mastered by students of English Department at university level in order to achieve the various writing modes, such as essay, creative writing, and academic writing. The objective of this study was to investigate the fifth semester students’ essay writing achievement of English Department of IAIN Samarinda. The  study  used  descriptive  quantitative  design.  It  involved  52  fifth semester students of English Department of IAN Samarinda in the academic year 2018/2019 as the sample of the study. The research instrument was the test of essay writing. The students’ essay writing result was scored by using the writing score rubric of Jacobs, et al (1981). Then, the researcher analyzed the data by using the descriptive statistics of SPSS Program version 22 in terms of mean score, frequency and percentage. The research finding of this study showed that the essay writing achievement of the fifth semester students of English Department of IAIN Samarinda  was  good  categorized  with  75.85  in  the  mean  score.  It  was  also followed by the writing aspects, covering content (Good), organization (Good), vocabulary (Good), language use (Good) and mechanics (Fair). It implied that the students’ essay writing achievement needed to be preserved and improved.</note>
